How Do You Look Natural in Wedding Photos?

Worried about awkward wedding photos? TAZ Photography shares simple ways to feel comfortable, look natural, and create romantic photos that feel like you.

Simple direction, genuine connection, and photos that feel like you.

If you're worried that you and your partner are going to look awkward in your wedding photos, you're definitely not alone. Most people aren't professional models, and most couples aren't used to having a camera pointed at them for an extended period of time. So when someone says, "Okay, now pose," it can be surprisingly easy to forget what to do with your hands, where to look, or even how to stand like a normal human being.

            The good news?

You don't have to know how to pose to have beautiful, natural wedding photos.

The best way to look natural in photographs is to stop trying so hard to look natural. Instead, focus on each other, keep moving, and work with a photographer who can give you enough direction to feel comfortable without making every moment feel staged.

That's a big part of how I approach wedding photography at TAZ Photography. I don't expect you to arrive knowing how to pose, and I don't want your wedding portraits to feel like you're performing for a camera. I'll guide you through the parts that need direction while giving you plenty of room to simply be yourselves.

Because your photographs should look beautiful, but they should still feel like

           you

           .

You don't need to know how to pose

One of the things I hear from couples all the time is, "We're so awkward in photos."

           And honestly? That's okay.

You don't have to be naturally comfortable in front of a camera. You don't have to know your angles. You don't have to have a collection of poses saved to Pinterest. You don't even have to think you're particularly photogenic.

That's my job to help with.

Rather than placing you in a pose and expecting you to hold it while I take a dozen photographs, I like to give you something to do together. You might walk hand in hand, pull each other into a hug, dance for a minute, fix your partner's tie, play with your veil, or simply get a little closer.

I'll still pay attention to the things that make a photograph work, like light, composition, location, and positioning. But instead of asking you to perform for the camera, I'll give you opportunities to interact with each other.

That small shift can make a huge difference.

Focus on your partner, not the camera

If you're wondering how to get more natural wedding photos, this is probably the simplest thing you can do:

           focus on your person.

When you're nervous about being photographed, it's easy to become hyper-aware of yourself. You start thinking about whether your smile looks weird, whether your arms look awkward, or whether you're standing at the right angle.

Suddenly, you're not thinking about your wedding day anymore. You're thinking about your face.

So instead, look at your partner.

Talk to them. Hold their hand. Lean into them. Tell them something funny. Take a second to actually look at the person you're marrying and remember where you are and what you're doing.

When your attention shifts away from the camera and back toward each other, your body tends to relax. Your expressions become more genuine, your interactions feel more natural, and the photographs start to reflect the relationship rather than the fact that someone is taking your picture.

           That's what I want.

            Not a perfect performance.

           A real connection.

           Movement makes a huge difference

Standing completely still in front of a camera can make almost anyone feel awkward.

Movement gives you something to focus on, and it creates natural opportunities for connection.

That doesn't mean you need to run dramatically through a field while your photographer yells, "Be romantic!" In fact, some of the best movement is incredibly simple.

Walk together. Hold hands. Pull each other closer. Give your partner a hug. Whisper something in their ear. Slow dance. Fix their jacket. Rest your head on their shoulder.

Those little actions allow you to interact instead of simply waiting for the shutter.

And sometimes the photograph I love most isn't even the moment I planned.

Maybe you both start laughing after a ridiculous prompt. Maybe your partner pulls you in a little closer than expected. Maybe you look at each other for one extra second.

Those in-between moments are often where the emotion lives.

           Natural doesn't mean completely unposed

There's a common idea that "natural photography" means the photographer should never direct you.

That's not how I see it.

Some of the most beautiful wedding portraits are intentionally created. The location is chosen because the light is beautiful. You're positioned in a way that photographs well. I'm paying attention to the background, composition, movement, and all of the little details you probably aren't thinking about in the moment.

But within that intentional photograph, there is still room for you to be yourselves.

That's where my guided lifestyle approach comes in.

I'll help create the photograph, but I don't want to control every single thing that happens inside of it. I'll give you direction and prompts, then let your relationship take over from there.

The result can be a photograph that is beautifully composed

           and

            genuinely you.

You don't have to choose between romantic portraits and authentic moments. I want your gallery to have both.

What if we're really awkward in photos?

First of all, you're probably not nearly as awkward as you think you are.

But even if you are? That's okay too.

Every couple is different. Some people warm up to the camera immediately. Some need a little time. Some couples are constantly making each other laugh, while others are quieter and more affectionate. Some people love being close in photographs, while others would rather have a little more space.

There isn't one correct way to look like a couple.

That's why I don't want every couple I photograph to look the same.

I'll pay attention to how you naturally interact and adjust my direction around you. Maybe you need more guidance at the beginning and less once you warm up. Maybe walking makes you feel more comfortable. Maybe you're naturally playful. Maybe you're more sentimental and quiet.

Those differences aren't something to hide.

They're part of what makes your photographs yours.

My goal isn't to make you look like someone else's version of a romantic couple. It's to create photographs that reflect the way you love each other.

You don't need to memorize Pinterest poses

Save the Pinterest board. Save the Instagram posts. Send me the photographs you love.

But please don't feel like you need to memorize them before your wedding day.

Inspiration can be really helpful because it gives me a better understanding of what you're drawn to. Maybe you love close, intimate portraits. Maybe you love movement and wide environmental photographs. Maybe you love dramatic landscapes or quiet, emotional moments.

           Those details are useful.

What isn't necessary is showing up with a list of 25 poses and trying to recreate every single one.

            Instead, I'd rather understand

how you want your photographs to feel.

Romantic? Playful? Emotional? Adventurous? Quiet? Warm? A little bit of everything?

Once I know that, I can help create photographs that fit you rather than simply recreating someone else's.

What you wear can help you feel natural, too

Feeling comfortable physically can make a bigger difference than people realize.

If you're constantly pulling down your dress, adjusting your shirt, worrying about uncomfortable shoes, or wondering whether something is sitting correctly, it's difficult to forget about the camera.

That doesn't mean you need to sacrifice style for comfort. It just means I recommend choosing something that makes you feel good

           and

            lets you move.

Your wedding day is already going to ask a lot of your clothes. Your dress needs to move with you. Your shoes need to survive more than five minutes. Your suit should let you hug, dance, sit, and actually enjoy yourself.

The same idea applies to engagement sessions.

You don't need to dress like a completely different person because you're getting professional photographs taken. If you're normally a jeans-and-boots person, you don't suddenly have to become someone who wears formalwear every weekend.

I want your engagement photos to look like an elevated version of

           you

, not like you're playing dress-up for someone else's Pinterest board.

Your photographer should make you feel comfortable, not perform

Your experience matters just as much as the final gallery.

I don't want you spending your wedding day wondering whether you're standing correctly or waiting for the next instruction. I want you to actually experience your wedding while I'm there documenting it.

That means I'll give you direction when you need it, help you find beautiful light, adjust things when necessary, and keep an eye on what's happening around you. But I'll also give you space.

           Space to laugh.

           Space to breathe.

Space to look at each other.

Space for something unexpected to happen.

Because some of the most meaningful photographs aren't the ones I can completely plan.

They're the moments that happen because you forgot about the camera for a second.

The best wedding photos don't have to be perfect

           I love a beautiful portrait.

I love gorgeous light, a beautiful location, thoughtful composition, and a photograph that makes you stop scrolling for a second.

But I also love the photographs where everything isn't perfectly controlled.

The veil blowing into your face.

Your partner making you laugh at exactly the wrong time.

The giant smile you couldn't contain.

The hand squeeze during the ceremony.

Your dad trying not to cry.

The way your new spouse looks at you when they think you're not paying attention.

The dance floor getting completely out of control.

Those photographs matter because they're attached to a memory.

Years from now, I don't want you to look through your wedding gallery and remember only what everything looked like. I want you to remember what it

           felt

            like.

           The nerves.

           The excitement.

The people who showed up for you.

           The ridiculous laughter.

           The quiet moments.

           The person standing beside you.

So, how can I look natural in wedding photos?

Focus on each other, keep moving, and don't worry about being perfect.

You don't need to know how to pose. You don't need to be naturally photogenic. You don't need to memorize Pinterest poses or suddenly become someone who loves being in front of a camera.

You need a photographer who knows how to guide you.

Someone who can create beautiful, intentional portraits while giving you room to interact naturally. Someone who understands that your relationship is the story and the photographs are there to preserve it.

Because ultimately, I don't want you looking through your gallery and thinking:

"Wow, we look really good in pictures."

I want you to look at it and think:

           "That feels like us."

That's what I'm after with every TAZ Photography wedding. Romantic portraits, natural movement, genuine connection, beautiful light, and all of the little moments that happen in between.

You bring the love. I'll help you turn it into photographs that feel like you.

A Few Simple Ways to Feel More Natural in Photos

If you're still nervous about being photographed, these little things can make a big difference:

            Keep moving.

Walking, dancing, hugging, and interacting give your body something natural to do.

            Focus on your partner.

You don't need to look at the camera in every photograph.

            Talk to each other.

It doesn't have to be profound. Sometimes the most genuine smiles come from saying something completely ridiculous.

            Don't worry about perfection.

Your photographer can adjust hands, hair, posture, or positioning when something needs a little help.

Wear something you can move in.

Feeling physically comfortable makes it much easier to relax.

            Trust your photographer.

You don't need to arrive knowing how to pose. That's part of what you're hiring them to help with.

Give them something natural to do. Hold your partner's hand, touch their arm, adjust their tie or veil, wrap your arms around them, or simply let them rest naturally. Your photographer can also help if something feels uncomfortable.

Do I need to know how to pose for wedding photos?

No. Your photographer should provide direction throughout your portraits. You don't need to memorize poses or know exactly what to do before you arrive.

Can wedding photos look natural even if they're posed?

Absolutely. A photograph can be intentionally composed and still feel authentic. Guided lifestyle photography combines direction, movement, natural interaction, and genuine connection to create photographs that don't feel stiff or overly staged.

What if my partner hates having their picture taken?

Tell your photographer before your engagement session or wedding day. That's useful information, not a problem. A photographer who understands how to work with different personalities can adjust their approach and use movement, prompts, and interaction to make the experience more comfortable.

Make the most of the season by following these simple guidelines

The new season is a great reason to make and keep resolutions. Whether it’s eating right or cleaning out the garage, here are some tips for making and keeping resolutions.

    Make a list

Lists are great ways to stay on track. Write down some big things you want to accomplish and some smaller things, too.

    Check the list regularly

Don’t forget to check in and see how you’re doing. Just because you don’t achieve the big goals right away doesn’t mean you’re not making progress.

    Reward yourself

When you succeed in achieving a goal, be it a big one or a small one, make sure to pat yourself on the back.

    Think positively

Positive thinking is a major factor in success. So instead of mulling over things that didn’t go quite right, remind yourself of things that did.

There are so many good reasons to communicate with site visitors. Tell them about sales and new products or update them with tips and information.

Here are some reasons to make blogging part of your regular routine.

Blogging is an easy way to engage with site visitors

Writing a blog post is easy once you get the hang of it. Posts don’t need to be long or complicated. Just write about what you know, and do your best to write well.

    Show customers your personality

When you write a blog post, you can really let your personality shine through. This can be a great tool for showing your distinct personality.

Blogging is a terrific form of communication

Blogs are a great communication tool. They tend to be longer than social media posts, which gives you plenty of space for sharing insights, handy tips and more.

It’s a great way to support and boost SEO

Search engines like sites that regularly post fresh content, and a blog is a great way of doing this. With relevant metadata for every post so search engines can find your content.

    Drive traffic to your site

Every time you add a new post, people who have subscribed to it will have a reason to come back to your site. If the post is a good read, they’ll share it with others, bringing even more traffic!

    Blogging is free

Maintaining a blog on your site is absolutely free. You can hire bloggers if you like or assign regularly blogging tasks to everyone in your company.

A natural way to build your brand

A blog is a wonderful way to build your brand’s distinct voice. Write about issues that are related to your industry and your customers.

Tips for writing great posts that increase your site traffic

Write about something you know. If you don’t know much about a specific topic that will interest your readers, invite an expert to write about it.

           Speak to your audience

You know your audience better than anyone else, so keep them in mind as you write your blog posts. Write about things they care about. If you have a company Facebook page, look here to find topics to write about

Take a few moments to plan your post

Once you have a great idea for a post, write the first draft. Some people like to start with the title and then work on the paragraphs. Other people like to start with subtitles and go from there. Choose the method that works for you.

           Don’t forget to add images

Be sure to include a few high-quality images in your blog. Images break up the text and make it more readable. They can also convey emotions or ideas that are hard to put into words.

           Edit carefully before posting

Once you’re happy with the text, put it aside for a day or two, and then re-read it. You’ll probably find a few things you want to add, and a couple more that you want to remove. Have a friend or colleague look it over to make sure there are no mistakes. When your post is error-free, set it up in your blog and publish.
